Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
Things to consider: A challenge could be personal, or something you have faced in your community or school. Why was the challenge significant to you? This is a good opportunity to talk about any obstacles you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from the experience. Did you have support from someone else or did you handle it alone? If you’re currently working your way through a challenge, what are you doing now, and does that affect different aspects of your life? For example, ask yourself, “How has my life changed at home, at my school, with my friends or with my family?”
My biggest challenge or my biggest change has definitely been my social life. During freshman year I talked to two people and it was because we went to the same middle school. Towards the end of freshman year I started to socialize more but It was with a group of three and I stuck with them for two years talking to other people only when necessary. Not because I hated everyone but because I felt like I didn’t need to. It made me limit myself. When I started Junior year none of my friends were in my class so I was alone. I was forced to socialize with other people because of that, not having anyone in my class is the best thing to happen to me. I began to talk to other people who I had known but wasn’t very close with and over the course of first semester we became very close. Not only did I get close with them but through that I pushed my limits and I began to talk to everyone. In class and other places I try to at least talk to everyone, that’s probably why everyone finds me annoying. I’m very outspoken now, maybe a little too much. This has helped me academically because talking to everyone has improved my group work in projects, it has also helped me ask for any help I might need. I’m no longer afraid to raise my hand or talk to a teacher or fellow peer. My group of friends now is probably the best I’ve had. I'm very thankful for them for all they have helped me through. We work together very well academically and socially and they have helped me be more outgoing and helped me improve myself. I also talk to a lot more people than I did before which makes me feel closer to my grade. In the future I want to make sure to keep that quality, being outgoing is something that can only be beneficial and something I want be in the long run.

Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. Things to consider: A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?
In humanities class we did the progressive project. The progressive project is where you pick a problem, mine was endangered animals, and learn about it. After learning about it you figure out the main cause of the problem and design a prototype to help the problem in any way. My group made a board game designed to teach kids about California condors. My groupmates and I worked well together but we lacked motivation. We took a long time getting things done during certain parts because we didn’t know what to do, how to do it or who should do it. So it was always like “are you going to do it or do you want me to?” which took up time only for replies like “Sure I mean if you want I guess I can do it”. That’s why during this project I felt like I really needed to take charge. My group was not on top of things, we weren’t motivated. I had to take control and figure out what needed to be done in order to finish by our deadlines and then I delegated tasks. It was hard at first because I didn’t want to be that bossy girl that everyone hates but I realized if I didn’t step up we wouldn’t get anything done. After I took charge, my group was getting what we needed done. It was a little difficult because I had to make sure to do it so that we each get tasks we’re capable of doing and making sure that they’re equally distributed. In the end our final product was great. During progressive day, which is where we test our prototypes, we had a great time and our board game was a success. We played the board game with fourth graders and after we asked them about their experience. The fourth graders told us about how much they learned and how much fun they had. Our board game and our lesson were a huge success and I’d like to think I played a big part.
