- Prompt 1: Describe how a specific skill you acquired in high school was valuable in your externship. How did you learn that skill? How were you able to use it? Or perhaps was there is a skill you needed but didn't have. How did you deal with that? Group work is a big skill we learned that really helps us. Also critical thinking is something that has helped us a lot since we need to think of ways to help and make things easier on our mentor. Overall we are kind of presented a problem then we have to brainstorm a way to solve it then we have to carry it out.
- Prompt 2: How has your externship been similar to AND different from projects you've done in high school? I mean they are different things but the group work and everything is the same. We are still kind of doing little projects to help others but there's way more freedom here. Our mentor is really cool and let's us find our own way to do things.

Challenges prompt growth --> What are some challenges that you have encountered and what are the steps you have taken to address and overcome those challenges? \How have your mentor and your co-workers supported you in your growth in skills and knowledge?
There really are no challenges I had to overcome my mentor is a great, she's really sweet and understanding. The work isn't extremely hard it manageable. My mentor is always there to help me and we are helping her to the best of our ability. She's taught me a lot about the shop and life which I will always remember.
Above is my interview with my mentor, Caroline. I got to learn a lot about her along with the things I already has knowledge of. I found out that she took the bar exam and passed but instead wanted to follow her dreams and she opened a ceramics shop. She didn't feel comfortable on video so to make this feel less like a forced interrogation we recorded an audio file.
My internship is at a ceramics place in Ocean Beach. So far my mentor, Caroline, taught us how to glaze ceramics which is really simple and a little messy (but it is pottery after all so it should have been expected), the glazing is what gives it the glossy finish that is like a little layer of glass. It's really cool because the spray is a certain color, for example the one I used yesterday was green, so that you can see that you covered every inch of the surface, but after you put it in the kiln it comes out clear as day. Also the kiln has to be 2000 degrees so that it can heat the clay. It's really cool but really scary. My site has a shelf of ceramics you can pick and the price is on the bottom, it includes any paints you might use and all the kiln and glazing is done for you as well. Not only does she offer ceramics but she offers henna, canvas painting, mosaic, a lot of cool things. Also my mentor is really funny and not intimidating at all so Im all excitement and no nerves. |
