In what ways has your internship inspired you to think about college? Have you discovered new colleges that you are interested in attending? Have you learned about new courses to study or majors to pursue? Anytime I think about college, I get super nervous and scared. I'll be surprised if I even get in to a college. Not because of any academic reasons but just because I worry too much and in my head it makes sense for me not to get accepted into one. I'm very indecisive and when I think about a career I want to pursue I think about how i'm going to be stuck doing that for the rest of mt life so it better be a good one. I had a couple different majors in mind. Something involving psychology, business or film. I could not narrow it down from those three. After being at Digital gym, I discovered that's just not the career for me. After talking to a teacher from Washington I learned that there's tons of jobs you can get different places with a business major and so I decided that's the career I would like to pursue, at least for now. Besides that nothing changed.

What are you most thankful for in your internship experience? What people, experiences, situations, etc. What new appreciations have you gained through internship and how did you develop these? I am thankful for my mentor Kania. She was super sweet and made me feel welcome. Since out internship ended early we helped at the forum and I was able to to talk to people from all over. I talked to one person in particular who asked me about my plans for the future and after talking to her and seeing what she went through and what she did. I realized what I would like to due and what would benefit me the most in the future. That really helped me decide what career choice I want to further pursue.
I appreciate all the work put into the Latino Film festival. Before I didn’t know too much about it. But now that I saw all the behind the curtain work I realize how important and hard it is to put it all together. Having to go through tons of submissions and seeing which ones would fit best. Giving people the good news, and the bad news. Making all the posters and making sure all the sponsors are taken care of. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? How did your view of life beyond high school change or develop during your time as an intern? How might internship influence the direction of your life (college, career, goals)?
Post your iPOL presentation and reflect on the following: describe your iPOL preparation process. What presentation tools are you planning to use? Are you relying on notes, a memorized talk, something else? How are you preparing to address questions you might be asked? What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why? How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace (what did you do overall? What were your day to day activities/responsibilities)?
I just typed the answers to the questions then I made a powerpoint and made everything flow nicely. Im going to have notecards with just like little points so i remember to say everything. There's not much preparation for answering questions, i mean i'll answer them honestly and I know what I did and any other things i need to know I do.
Making all the posters and making sure all the people who donate money get their advertisements in. I have helped Kania with marketing and any tasks she needs done. In the beginning I also helped with the kids camp.We also made a Public Service Announcement about gambling. And we worked on our mural documentary for our project. I learned a lot about myself. I learned that just because I don’t have any actual work doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. I had to get up and ask for work. She didn’t just keep giving me tasks. She trusted me to stay on task and ask for more when I finished. This all really showed me how important communication is. When I would help with the kids camp sometimes schedules had to be moved around so I had to make sure to communicate with both my mentor and with Gaby, who was the teacher for the kids camps.
You are now more than halfway done with your internship project. How is it going? How did your project(s) go from an idea or inspiration to a final product? Describe the project details → share out the process from beginning to end. What did you learn about yourself through working on the internship project(s)? Discuss challenges, solutions, skills utilized & gained, and overall learning achieved. We got separated into two groups and flipped a coin to decide which project we get. My group and I got the Mural project. We have to interview people about the murals in North Park and the positive impact they have on the community. Like any documentary we planned shots and interviews, did them, and then put them together and edited it. I learned that I need to be in charge of myself. If i'm not doing anything then I need to find something to do or ask for some more work. That's what I learned about myself.
Here there's much more freedom. Which is crazy because we have freedom at school but that's minuscule compared to the freedom here. There's still work to be done and projects we do with people like at school. We have a longer lunch which makes a huge difference. This has been super helpful because while I enjoyed this experience and the work it's not something I would want to continue. I said this in my previous post but I'm hoping that I'll really take what i've learned here and apply it to my school work. I learned how to be more diligent and ration out my workload so i'm not stressed but i'm not doing nothing either. This really helped me with deciding my career choice for the future.
What limitations have you recognized in yourself that you want to overcome during internship, or use this internship experience to help you overcome When I don't have any work to do like homework or something I don't do anything. I could spend that time studying for the sat's but I don't. That's something I had to stop doing here. When I finished the work here I had to go and ask for some more or go and start filming for our documentary. I have learned how to be more diligent. Hopefully i'll keep that diligence when we return back to school.
What is the biggest challenge YOU face at internship? Also, describe one challenge that arose at your internship site (related to the work the company does). How did your mentor and their colleagues solve this problem? In the beginning one challenge I faced was finding work to do. So I started asking my mentor for more work and now i'm always busy. This week we had to go around and find places to interview for our documentary. We talked to one person about a possible interview and they said they would contact us but they never did, it was obvious that they did not want to be interviewed. So that became a minor problem, we decided to find another place, when we talked to them they were super excited to be a part of this documentary. Problems that happen here are more digital like the batteries for the cameras aren't charged or the tripod stand isn't working. Those are easy solutions, grab another battery and put that one to charge or fix the tripod stand if it's not fixable grab another one. props to Sarah Moradpour for the title and for being in the picture.
1. Angel 2. Nymeisha 3. Tuong What stands out to you from their experiences? What experiences do you have in common? What contrasts do you see? What questions do you have? It's crazy how different everyones is. But at the same time everyone is helping out. Tuong is helping animals and of course the organization and Angel is helping students physically and her mentor and me and Nymeisha are helping our organizations. I think my main question for everyone is if this has helped decide if they want to pursue a career in this job. The work load is different for each person and that's predictable but it's still vastly different Tuong is helping animals while Nymeisha is giving tours and Angel's taping hands. It's crazy how exotic the animals in Tuong's internship is and how Angels is actually going and helping the people not just doing office work like I had previously thought she would.
How do you see yourself growing or changing over the course of your internship? Well it's already started changing. When we first started they gave us some things to do. But now we have a lot of freedom. We are in charge of making sure we have things to do. If I wanted to I could play games all day but that wouldn't be beneficial, so it's my job to go and ask my mentor for work when i've finished all mine. I've also been helping the kids with filming and editing which is very helpful to me. When you teach you have to make sure everything is clear and understandable, especially when you're helping little kids. As we start to get more into the film making we are in charge of getting all our shots and setting up interviews and we have things to do but we have the freedom to do them. I need to make sure that I don't take that for granted and that I use that freedom for good things and not just waste time. It would kill me to betray that trust they gave us. That's how I will grow and change, I will not just waste time away I will work and be diligent so I get the most out of this internship.
What are the social interactions like at your internship workplace? Do people spend a lot of time socializing? Are people isolated, doing their own things? Do they work in open spaces, cubicles? Lots of collaboration on work projects? Not much collaboration? How does the social dynamic impact or reflect the organization’s work? The people in my workplace don't really interact that much they interact with us when needed and the same with eachother, most of the tim ethey are busy especially with the Latino Film Festival coming up. Upstairs is where everyone does the work and its a very open space, everyone has their own desks but their not closed off spaces. They all callaborate with us and with eachother when needed. They come in here to check and critique the poster that people have made. And individually we each have a mentor that we each work with a lot.
Well like I have said in previous blog posts i'm making a documentary. It's going to be about the murals around north park. We will be interviewing business owners with murals on their walls and why they allowed them. We'll also talk to pedestrians about what effect they have on the community and lastly we will be talking to the mural artists. The final product will be shown at our P.O.L's. We have to use camera's and edit our videos at the end. We also have to set up the interviews and plan our shots and all the pre-production, production, and post-production stuff. This will be on the Digital Gym youtube and they can use our videos to promote their classes and show how beneficial their program is.
Who benefits from the work that you do at your internship? Who in the community benefits from the work? Overall, that happens at your internship site? How or why do people benefit from this work? My job specifically helps my mentor and the members here at Digital Gym. We are about to start our documentary which isn't to beneficial but its very informational and its a big eye-opener for the community. Our documentary is about the murals in and around North Park. We help with the Flickr account by taking and posting images of the student camps they have here. We also help the staff here by giving our ratings on some of the submissions to the Latino Film Festival so the decision making will be a little easier. We benefit the community by letting their voices be heard and making documentaries on the stuff that happens.
Moises Graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies with a concentration in Psychology. Currently, he is a Master of Arts candidate in the Television, Film, and New Media Department at San Diego State University. His past professional experience includes internships at Summit Entertainment and The Weinstein Company, where he assisted the heads of development and acquisitions departments with a multitude of tasks. This is from the website, and is written better than I could write. After talking for a little I came to realize how great Moises is. He is super kind and helpful. He is the exhebitions manager here at Media Arts Center San Diego. When we asked him if we could talk for a bit he didn't hesitate to say yes and let us talk to him for a litte. I'm happy to be working with such great people. So far what has surprised me the most is their theater. I've seen multiple people from different backgrounds, ethnicities and ages come to see the movies played here. I have also gotten the chance to see the movie trailers for movies that have aired here, and I was surprised at how different they all are and the variety they have here. One on their missions is to give people a chance at having their voices being heard by showing their movies. A lot of times places like AMC only show big time movies from big directors or actors and don't give the small guy a chance. This theater does a really good job of showing different movies. MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO promotes access to film and video as tools for community self-expression and social change and supports the professional development of media artists. When I walk into the media center in the morning I see people on computers and people teaching kids how to use the macs. So many people come in to take advantage of all the equipment that Digital Gym provides. I also have been involved in looking at different submissions, and they get tons. One of my jobs is to find people we can advertise a certain movie to. With different movies there's different people and this really gives people from different cultures and background a chance to see movies that if not for digital gym might not have been available to the public. It brings together the community and people from everywhere. I have always been interested in Media. Photography, film, editing, and anything having to do with media. A hope I have is seeing if this is a career I would like to pursue. Which ties into my fear, i'm scared that I won't want to pursue a career in media and this won't benefit me as much as it could. A dream for me would be loving this and focusing my interest so I know what I would like to do in the future. Even if I don't pursue a career in this area, I will have a lot more real world experience with business and it would come in handy knowing this for the future.
